The Original Coopers Alehouse
Coopers, an Australian owned brewery which was founded in 1837, has always been known for brewing top quality beers. Over the years, the business has grown into an international with over 350 pubs spread throughout 14 countries. Australia currently boasts 120 of these pubs, as well as 30 in New Zealand, 14 in Malaysia, and 13 in China.
The Cooper’s Alehouse was originally founded in an old building on nearby Hindley Street in 1859 by John Howard Cooper. It was one of the first hotels established in Adelaide, and it quickly became famous for its rustic interiors, cordial hospitality and excellent ale. When the Cooper’s Alehouse first opened its doors, Adelaide was still a rough frontier town. This fact is reflected in some of the building’s original features, like the barred windows, heavy doors and thick walls. In 1881, the Cooper’s Alehouse expanded and moved to a new building on the same site.
The new building was a grand, two-storey brick structure with a high pitched roof, columned balconies and arched. In 1988 the Coopers Alehouse was opened in the historic Adelaide town of Woodville, which is just 5 minutes north of the CBD. The Coopers Alehouse was the first pub in town and the first in the State to be run by the Coopers Brewery. The Coopers Brewery has been in business since 1862, and to this day is still a family owned and operated brewery. The Coopers Brewery is the oldest family owned brewery in Australia, and also has the largest malting plant of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

This set of pictures are of the original Coopers Alehouse in South Australia. It is one of the most amazing buildings I have ever been in. I took these pictures 8 years ago but the building is still there. It is an old sandstone structure now used as a brewery museum and a great place to taste the very best beer in the world.
The Original Coopers Alehouse in South Australia is a pub with a long and interesting history. It was first built in 1838 and named the Prince Albert.The Prince Regent’s eldest son. However, the Prince Regent (later King George IV) was not amused by the pub’s name, and it was subsequently renamed the Prince Alfred.
The Prince Alfred had a long and storied life, and was the site of the first meeting of the South Australian Parliament in 1857. By the 1970s it was owned by James Norman and had been renamed Coopers Alehouse, after the nearby brewery. The pub is now owned by the Coopers brewery, but is still one of the oldest buildings in Adelaide.
The Original Coopers Alehouse opened in August 2009 in the town of Woodside, on the outskirts of Adelaide, South Australia. It was built by a group of local residents, who had been members of the local Coopers Alehouse, a support group for families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
