Norwood and its surrounding suburbs were one of the first areas of the Northern Territory to be occupied by Europeans. The first white child born in the Northern Territory was born at the Palmerville Receiving Depot and is said to have been named Norwood Conrad’ in honor of the then Administrator of the Northern Territory, Mr. William Edward Morris, Baron Norwood. The area was originally known as the Palmerville External Settlement when the railway line was built in 1887 and was occupied by the Noona People. After the railway closed in 1970, the external settlement was re-established as a residential area.
